Workshops and Presentations

Through engaging workshops and presentations, EdInnovations help educators teach complex texts with confidence and clarity. We tailor each workshop to reflect the current needs of the audience. We show how instructional strategies and programs can reflect different disciplinary connections such as math, science, arts, and reading.

We support all learners in developing the essential reading skills to spark inquiry and curiosity about our society. Get in touch with us  and let us coach your educational team so that they can achieve a level of confidence for creating innovative and interactive reading connections through STEAM.

Here are descriptions of our past presentations and workshops.

Understanding the Role of Anchor Texts in Scientific Instruction

Participants will understand how anchor texts are connected to science and engineering practices—what students do using student work samples and sample anchor texts.

First, we will explore the use of concept loading in scientific complex texts through discussions, examples, and videos. We will look at how scientific texts are organized to communicate key ideas through concept loading using text/visual features and text structures such as direct definition context clues through a gallery walk.

In groups, teachers will dissect a given text to develop a think-aloud to explicitly teach scientific key ideas and concepts using text/visual features. Next, we will compare informational and science fiction text using a model for text organization/structure.

Creating an Effective Literacy Protocol for Reading Complex Texts

Participants will gain an understanding on how a foundational reading strategy can be used to help struggling readers to interpret complex texts.

First, teachers will explore how reciprocal teaching and literature circles provide a scaffolding protocol for struggling readers. Teachers will brainstorm and practice how each step is used by graphic organizers, role-plays, videos, and student work examples.

Illustrating Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning Through Graphs, Tables, and Charts

Participants will gain an understanding on how visual features can be used to develop a viable argument using the CER instructional routine. Teachers will interpret how a visual feature is used for illustrating science and engineering practices such as analyzing/interpreting data, using mathematics thinking, and communicating information.

Empowering Tomorrow’s STEM Workforce through Literacy Initiatives

One critical component in increasing minority, special education, and at-risk participation for STEM is addressing disciplinary literacy. We must gain an understanding about the role of literacy in teaching science and engineering practices in formal and informal educational settings. Within the new science standards, stakeholders must grasp how 3-dimensional learning incorporates literacy to address the achievement gap. The presentation will showcase the what, how and why literacy plays such an important role in developing our future scientists and engineers in the workplace as well as ways in which we can improve content literacy instruction to increase underrepresented populations in STEM courses and the workplace. In addition, a blueprint criteria for STEM literacy initiatives will be shared in which participants can tailor to meet their communities’ needs for greater impact.
